Reducing Size of Published Elearning / SCORM

Reducing Size of Published Elearning / SCORM

Compress Published SCORM !

If you are looking out for compression of your published SCORM, this is the article for you. You can read through or jump to the video in the end which shows you the process of getting 2x – 15x reduction in your SCORM file size.

Does Large eLearning / SCORM Size Bother You ?

Have you ever been effected by the size of the eLearning you have created. If not, this article still welcomes you, but is not for you.

It may be of special concern in following scenarios like:

  1. Your LMS (Learning Management System) has a certain upload size limit and this course is out of bounds
  2. Your elearning has inserted videos and they are of large size and you cannot remove / edit it.
  3. Your LMS is all fine, but your end users are having difficulty accessing your content. There are lots of loading buffer wheel seen, interuppting adption.
  4. You have extended learning to Mobile phone and mobile phone does not have

Why do we have large sized Elearning ?

eLearning Authoring tool has all-or-none optimization options

You may be using a eLearning authoring tool, which may not be optimizing your medias properly. Generally content authoring tools have options to optimize media, but its one size fit all. E.g. you can rarely at a media level say reduce this to 80% and keep this at 20%. You have to stick to 1 quality.

Uncompressed Media used during content Development

Media is generally provided by a graphic design team or pulled from online resources. Many a time we are not aware of the size of the media and they are pulled in.

Ok, how can I reduce size of published Elearning

  1. Ensure that input media that you are using are following your “size” guidelines
  2. Make sure you understand use your authoring team compression options
  3. Make use of tools like Dr Elearning, where you can compress your content and much granular level

Rescuing your Media file and Audio Transcripts from Published SCORM Zip File

The Elearning Developer’s Nightmare

It may happen that you have lost your authoring tool file, for whatever reason, like a hard disk crash etc.

You may need to restore your work by

  1. Recovering images, video and audios
  2. For Audio getting back the transcript using speech to text

You can recover the media by unzipping the file and then hunting through different file types, but it maybe a difficult process to find out and search various files. If your project is big, then its the proverbial finding-the-needle-in-the-heystack moment for you. , provides an elegant way to do it and its designed for such rescue missions.

Recovering Images, Videos and Audio

This video explains the steps for recovering images, audio and video. Also shares powerful filters and preview options to make the process easy as a breeze.

Recovering Transcript from Audio (The Hack)

If you have a software license for a speech to text tool, you can use that. In this example we used IBM’s STT (speech to text engine), which is located at :

Modifying / Editing Published Elearnings SCORM without Source Code

Modifying / Editing published SCORM without source code is a very powerful and life saver feature of tool.

Case 1 : Legacy SCORM image to be changed

We had compliance team of our customers calling up, to requesting to modify the legacy SCORM as the board members image in the Elearnings needs to be changed, and the predicament is that they dont have the source code of the Elearning.

Case 2 : Source code is there but vendor cycle is too long (+costly) to edit Elearning

Another case has been where the client wanted the name of a certain product brand to be wiped out from the image, again they did not have access to the source code and the cycle of getting in vendor is too long cycle, something need to be done “as of yesterday”.

For both of the above scenarios, there was a need for a method / tool for quickly looking for an image and be able to change it quickly and package back as SCORM.

With changing the image and packaging as SCORM becomes as easy as a finger snap.

This video explain the process :

Project Dashboard

What is a project dashboard

Project dashboard allows you to run operations on your zip file, like compressing them into smaller size or editing a certain file in it.

Project Dashboard Card

On left side we see a card for Project Dashboard which has these options

Big buttons

  1. Compress : It you would be taken to the compression view on the same page, which will allow you to compress your file
  2. Edit File : It takes you the screen which allows you to make changes to certain files in the project

Small Buttons

  1. Preview : You can play your SCORM file using this option. Note that this is valid only for SCORM file, unless an explicit launcher is specified
  2. Download : After you have run operations like compression, editing etc to your satisfaction you may want to download the output file. This button allows you to create download job
  3. Delete : Remove the entire project

Distribution of Multimedia Card

This card given you an inside information on how your entire zip file is distributed against various media types like

  1. Text : Textual files, which could be like configuration files or javascript, css files etc. Ideally they are not supposed to be changed, and it has a very high likelihood of making your file non functional.
  2. Image : All the png, jpg, icon etc in your projects
  3. Audio : All mp3, wav etc
  4. Video : All the mp4, mpg etc

How to make use of the distribution ?

Distribution allows you to set expectation on what kind of compression you can expect. Here are some of the take aways

  1. If you have high text %, its kind of a bad news and you may not be able to reduce your file much
  2. If you have high Video %, its a great new as you can use compression in DoctorElearning to reduce it heavily
  3. Audio depending on characteristic can also be highly compressed
  4. Images can also be compressed nicely, if they are unoptimized

Creating Project

by prasoon 1 Comment

Why to create a project

A user can upload his elearning zip file and create a project. Which then enables him to run operations like compression, editing etc.

How to create a project

1 Click on “I want to create a Project” button

2a In the upload box, provide a name to your project. A good name could be something that can help you remember this project later e.g. “Code of Conduct 2020” , in case you were working on a SCORM (.zip) file which was related with Code of Conduct elearning.

2b Browse your zip file and upload. Depending on the size of your file, it may take time from a few seconds to a few mins. Once it successfully uploads, the box disappears.

3 You would be able to see your project with relevant details

  • Project Name : Name of the project you provided
  • File Name : Name of the zip file
  • Date : When the upload happened
  • File Size : Size of the file on disk (This may be more than actual size of file)
  • Copy : This option is useful if you want to create a new project out of existing project
  • Status : This will start with “Waiting” and can go into one of the following states
    • Select : Project is now processed properly and files are analyzed and it welcomes you to press it. This is the main option you would like to select
    • Wrong Zip : It means zip provided had some issues and hence could not be unarchived

Note : Your files may wait longer or take more time to process, depending on the other jobs running on the server.

Augmented Reality: Making something greater by adding to it!

Augmented Reality is the technology that works to augment sensory based inputs, on real world objects, using camera of your device.

Augmenting sensory inputs, literally means to make sensory inputs greater, by adding to it. AR helps us to inflate, elevate and multiply sensory inputs, by adding extra layers of digital information on real world objects.

The purpose of E learning is to engage it’s learners, for increasing learning effectiveness. This is where AR can transform and elevate the level of engagement and significantly improve the learning effectiveness.

Why do we need augmented reality in e learning content?

Augmented Reality enables us to add additional layers, by simply stapling digital content on already published content. The embedded information can be retrieved by learner on any other smart device, prompting them to engage with your content. AR enables us to elevate the engagement level of our e learning content, helping in sharing of additional information.

How does AR work?

AR technology helps us to add layers of digital information to a single object. The embedded information can be retrieved on any smart device, mobile phones, tablets, desktop, by using the camera, scanning the layered object where information has been embedded. Once User’s device scans this layered object, whatever information embedded in it, is fetched on their device, routing them to view the designated information.

How to leverage AR in E learning?

Let us now look at some possible use cases of Augmented Reality in E learning,

  • Increasing engagement level of Module:

In an already published low engagement e learning module, AR helps us to increase the complexity and engagement of the module, without making heavy changes in the source files, or revamping the entire digitised story of our module. Simply embedding a game in a slide, or addition of a layer of interactive content, is easily doable. Instead of opening up published file, Dr E Learning helps you to add layer of engaging content, on an already published file.

  • Quick quizzing:

Assessment and quizzes are seldom the things learners look forward to. Layering quick knowledge check quizzes in a published module, improves the engagement level of the learner, and helps in increasing learning effectiveness.

  • Feedback flow incorporation:

As creator of content, we realise how important learner feedback is in the world of online learning. With increasing distance between learner and teacher, we try to make sure that feedback does not get lost. Embedding feedback forms through AR and prompting users to scan these embedded feedback forms in their mobile devices, enables them to simultaneously share their feedback while going through learning module.

Augmented Reality has a huge market in Advertisements. Slipping learning facilitated tools information with relevant learning slides, can open a great window for advertising market in E learning world.

Compressing Elearning and $aving Dollars

In Mobile Learning world Content Size Does Matter

In the current scenario of shift towards mobile learning, the size and weight of E learning modules play great role. There has been a need to share maximum information in minimised size and minimised time frame.

Compressed qualitative content will require lesser consumption of data, hence loading quickly, especially in mobile devices and tablets, also saving a great deal of data transaction cost!

The interesting thought is that compressed file not only facilitates ease of passing information, but also reduces cost!

C for Compression, C for Cost Saving

Assuming I have a very heavy e learning module, say about 100 MB, and if I manage to compress my module, by enough qualitative amount, helping me to save 1 TB of transaction data from all the users that access this module, I end up saving close to USD 800, per month.

And even if I am running this course for 3 months, I end up saving approximately 1 Lakh INR, in a span of 3 months, only.

If we invest time and calculate amount of savings we can make, from compressing such E learning modules, even by 20%, we will be pretty amazed at the number we reach.

Once this thought strucks to a digital content creator and distributor, the need to compress already published data will rise even higher than what it currently is.

But the challenge arises in editing or compressing an already published file.

Compressing Published Elearning Output

The point of challenge most of E learning creators or publishers face, is to compress or edit an already published file. It is a greatly time consuming process, and requires deployment of a resource to open up source files, compress required media file, compile everything again, and re publish it.

In the times when this process will need to be iterated on a regular basis, we will require tools to do that quick job for us. Investing time and resources each time I wish to pass an already published module’s compressed version, through mobile phones and tablet, it will cost me an unnecessary amount, opening up a market for tools that master in doing the same job on easy clicks.

Dr Elearning to your rescue !

That is how Dr E Learning can help creators and publishers of E learning modules. It masters in editing, compressing and enhancing our elearning modules, which are already published files, without digging into source files.

So the compression activity that I regularly wish to do, can be done by few clicks to provide me with a healthy and qualitative compressed file, which i can pass through mobile devices, helping in reduction of consumption of data, saving me time and resources, which collectively saves me some great amount of capital!

So in a nutshell, this compression activity, ends up saving my time, resources and capital. And over this triangle, tops the ease with which i can do all of this, using Dr Elearning!
